Do you hate writing cover letters? Me too. But the good news is now we can have robots write them for us!

That’s right! AI tools make it quick and easy to write cover letters, and they really come in handy when you’re applying to a lot of different jobs.

If you’re totally confused and/or having nightmare-like visions of Skynet, don’t worry! I’m here to explain how to do it step-by-step like the good technical writer I am.

Here’s how you can use two free AI tools to create a cover letter so you don’t have to write it yourself.

DISCLAIMER: AI frequently gets confused and gets things wrong. It’s very important to always thoroughly review AI-generated content and edit it for accuracy, and cover letters are no exception. Also make sure you add the information for the company to which you’re applying and your own contact information.

Using the Grammarly AI Cover Letter Generator

Grammarly has created a handy tool that makes it super easy to generate a cover letter using AI.

Step 2: Click Upload file.

Step 3: Select your resume file. It must be a Word or plain text document. The tool doesn’t accept PDFs.

Step 4: Click Continue.

Step 5: Enter the title of the job for which you’re applying.

Step 6: Click Continue.

Step 7: Copy the information from the job listing and paste it into the textbox. There is a character limit, so you may need to edit the description down a bit. Just copy any bullet points that explain the job responsibilities and qualifications. Leave out anything about the company, benefits, travel requirements, etc.

Step 8: Click Create cover letter.

Step 9: Click Copy to copy the text, then paste it into Word or whatever text editor you use.

Using ChatGPT

ChatGPT is not always cooperative, but with the right prompt, you can use it to generate a great cover letter in just a few steps.

Step 2: Ask ChatGPT to create a cover letter based on your resume and the job description. Here’s an example prompt: Create a cover letter for me based on the attached resume and the following job listing.

Step 3: Copy and paste the job listing and attach your resume (ChatGPT 4) or copy and paste the text from your resume (ChatGPT 3.5).

Step 4: Click the Copy icon to copy the text, then paste it into Word or whatever text editor you use.
